Oban has a vibrant community life. Visit the Oban Town and District Diary to find out what is going on in the town and surrounding area.

Oban FM Radio is a community radio station based in Oban and broadcasting seven days a week. The local newspaper is The Oban Times which is published on a Thursday. Both are also good sources of information about Oban.

The population of Oban was estimated to be around 9,540 in 2006 (source HIE Oban Settlement Economic Overview 2007)

Argyll & Bute Council have developed an Oban Action Plan to set a strategic framework complementary to the Argyll and Bute Development Plan to support growth and enhance the quality of place and sustainable performance of Oban as the regional capital of the Western Highlands and the Islands. Argyll and Bute Council has agreed to an ambitious and forward-looking programme to assist regeneration and economic development in five of it’s waterfront towns – Campbeltown, Helensburgh, Oban, Rothesay and Dunoon. In November last year, the Council unanimously agreed to allocate more than £30 million to the programme, since named ‘CHORD’ .
